Birmingham City Schools spring break is March 22-26, 2027. The district’s modified calendar also gives students a Spring Intersession Feb. 22-26, so families here get two weeks off in late winter. Private schools and neighboring districts such as Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills and Hoover set their own dates; check each district’s calendar.

Camps

McWane Science Center runs day camps during spring break for children 4 to 13. In 2026 they ran March 23-27, with half-day camps for 4K and kindergarten and full-day camps for grades 1 to 6; registration opened Jan. 2 and closed March 16, according to the 2026 Camp McWane guide. Check McWane’s camps page after the new year for 2027 dates; lunch is not provided, so campers bring a nut-free lunch or buy one at registration.

  • McWane Science Center, 200 19th St. N.: hands-on exhibits, the shark tank, Itty Bitty Magic City for small children and the IMAX Dome. Regular hours are Wednesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m., according to its hours page.
  • Birmingham Zoo, 2630 Cahaba Road: in 2026 the zoo’s Dino Safari ran from March 4, and its Epic Egg Hunt was Saturday, April 4 (see our Easter guide).
  • Birmingham Botanical Gardens, 2612 Lane Park Road: free every day. In 2026 the Cherry Blossom Festival with the Japan-America Society of Alabama was Saturday, March 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., free, with a shuttle from the Mountain Brook Office Park, according to the Gardens’ 2026 listing.

What is open

City offices and libraries stay open during spring break; it is not a city holiday. Good Friday is: in 2026 city offices closed on Good Friday, April 3, and the Birmingham Public Library closed April 3 and 4, according to the city’s holiday list and the library’s holiday closures. Good Friday 2027 is March 26, the last day of BCS spring break.
