Easter in Birmingham 2027: egg hunts, festivals and closures

Easter 2027 is Sunday, March 28. Birmingham’s two big public egg hunts are the city’s free Spring Festival at Railroad Park and the Birmingham Zoo’s Epic Egg Hunt. In 2026 the city festival was on the Sunday before Easter and the zoo’s hunt on the Saturday before it. Neither had a 2027 date on Oct. 17.

Egg hunts in 2026

The city’s Spring Festival at Railroad Park

The city hosted its Spring Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Railroad Park. The free event had an Easter egg scavenger hunt, a DJ, food trucks, face painting, balloon artists, photos with Buddy the Bunny and giveaways, plus stations from Birmingham Park and Recreation, the Birmingham Legion and McWane Science Center. Families were asked to bring Easter baskets and lawn chairs. First Avenue South was closed between 14th and 18th streets South from 11 p.m. the night before through the evening of the festival, according to the city’s announcement.

In 2024 the event was called the city’s Easter Egg Hunt, with separate hunts for ages 0 to 5 and 6 to 10, according to the city’s 2024 release.

Epic Egg Hunt at the Birmingham Zoo

The zoo’s Epic Egg Hunt ran Saturday, April 4, 2026, on Henley Lawn, in three age groups:

• Ages 0 to 4: 10 to 10:30 a.m.
• Ages 5 to 8: 11 to 11:30 a.m.
• Ages 9 to 12: noon to 12:30 p.m.

The hunt was included with zoo admission and free for members. Each child could collect up to 10 empty eggs and trade them for a dinosaur egg while supplies lasted, and baskets could not use artificial grass. The zoo said the hunt would be canceled in rain, according to its 2026 event page.

No Birmingham restaurant had posted an Easter 2027 brunch on Oct. 17. Our brunch guide lists restaurants that serve brunch every weekend, from their own menus.

What is open and closed

• Good Friday: in 2026 the city closed its offices on Good Friday, April 3, according to its holiday list, and the Birmingham Public Library closed April 3 and 4, according to its holiday closures. Good Friday 2027 is March 26.
• Schools: Birmingham City Schools are on spring break March 22-26, 2027; see our spring break guide.

• Watch for the city’s announcement about a week ahead: in 2026 it came on March 24 for a March 29 festival.
