Enrolling a new student
Every student registers online each school year through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. The district says a new student is anyone who has never been enrolled in Birmingham City Schools or did not finish the previous school year there; new families create a PowerSchool account and fill out the new student form, in English or Spanish. A student moving from elementary to middle school, or middle to high school, registers as a returning student. The registration page lists required documents, vaccination rules and help with registration.
Enrollment over time
Enrollment fell every year from fall 2015 to fall 2023, from 24,693 to 20,884, then rose slightly to 20,954 in fall 2024, according to the federal Common Core of Data. The district had 53 schools in fall 2015 and 49 in fall 2024.
