Woodlawn is one of four neighborhoods in the city’s Woodlawn community, with East Avondale, Oak Ridge Park and South Woodlawn. At about 1,670 acres it is one of the larger neighborhoods on the east side, partly because the city’s boundary map puts Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport inside it. The comprehensive plan says Woodlawn began in the late 1800s as one of the city’s new working-class suburbs, and it lists Woodlawn as a “priority choice” for strategic action, citing its “historic, intact commercial core,” the renovated Woodlawn High School and its location, where “all roads lead in / out of downtown.” OpenStreetMap maps the Woodlawn Commercial Historic District on 1st Avenue North.
