The city lists this neighborhood as Forest Park-South Avondale, one of three in the Red Mountain community, with Highland Park and Redmont Park. It covers about 790 acres east of Highland Park, from the Avondale blocks around Avondale Park up the slope of Red Mountain. The city’s comprehensive plan says Birmingham’s industrial leaders of the late 1800s lived in Forest Park and the South Highlands. Among places for “strategic action,” the plan lists Avondale as a “priority choice,” citing its commercial district, its park and library, its walkability and its neighborhood leadership.
