Birmingham has 11 of Alabama's 18 restaurants in the 2026 Michelin Guide American South, four of them Bib Gourmands. Mountain Brook's Little Betty won the service award.

Birmingham has 11 restaurants in the 2026 Michelin Guide American South, the most of any city in Alabama. Four of them hold a Bib Gourmand, Michelin’s award for good food at a moderate price.

Michelin announced the second edition of the guide on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Its Alabama restaurant list now names 18 restaurants across the state. No Alabama restaurant has a Michelin star.

The general manager of a steakhouse in Mountain Brook, about four miles southeast of downtown, also won one of the guide’s individual awards.

A service award for Little Betty

Jared Patterson, general manager of Little Betty Steak Bar, won the guide’s 2026 service award, presented by Capital One. Michelin announced it in a profile of the restaurant’s service team.

Michelin said Patterson’s team “lends an air of approachability to the upscale steakhouse.” The guide said waiters learn the flavor and marbling of each cut, and that the restaurant’s partner ranchers help with the training. Patterson oversees more than 100 employees at the steakhouse and the newer Little Betty Sea Bar next door, according to the guide.

“Great service is about execution, but great hospitality is about making people feel something,” Patterson told Michelin.

It is the second year running that the region’s service award has gone to the Birmingham area. In 2025, Michelin gave it to Pardis Stitt of Bottega, co-owner of the Stitt Restaurant Group.

What it means for you

  • A Bib Gourmand is Michelin’s value pick, so Bayonet, La Fête, OvenBird and Pizza Grace are the ones to try if you want a Michelin name without a special-occasion bill.
  • Michelin’s dollar signs are its own price bands, from $ to $$$$. Check each restaurant’s menu before you book.
  • Bookings get harder after a Michelin listing. Reserve early for weekends, especially around the Magic City Classic on Saturday, Oct. 31, and the holidays.
