Last checked Oct. 17, 2026. This page is updated each year at the same address. Labor Day 2027 is almost a year away, so the details below are from the city’s and organizers’ 2026 notices, and we will update them when the 2027 notices are out.
Labor Day 2027 is Monday, Sept. 6. In Birmingham it closes city offices and libraries and pushes trash pickup back a day for the whole week. It is also a day the city’s industrial history is close at hand: Sloss Furnaces, the city-owned former blast furnace, marks Labor Day as a tribute to the workers who made iron there.

Labor Day and Sloss Furnaces
Sloss Furnaces, now a museum, describes itself as “a monument to the men and women whose sweat and skill powered the steel industry,” with exhibitions, guided tours and education programs about the workers’ lives, according to its 2026 Labor Day message. Labor Day weekend is also the anniversary of Sloss Metal Arts, the site’s iron casting program, which made its first pour in September 1985 and marked its 41st year in 2026 with an annual Labor Day celebration, according to the Sloss Metal Arts post.
