How scoring works

  • The scale: a scored inspection grades the business on a 100-point scale, with points deducted for each violation, according to JCDH and the state.
  • Two kinds of inspection: JCDH runs scored inspections and alternative, unscored inspections through the year. Only the scored ones appear on its list.
  • How often: food service establishments are generally required to be inspected at least three times a year, depending on the food they prepare, the state says.
  • The rules: JCDH enforces the Alabama State Board of Health’s food establishment sanitation rules, which adopt most of the 2013 FDA Food Code, plus some rules that apply only in Jefferson County.
  • The posted report: inspection reports and permits must be posted in plain view inside the business.

A score is a snapshot of one visit. A business can correct a problem the same day, and a later inspection can score higher or lower. A lower score does not by itself mean a business was closed or that anyone became ill.

Latest scores with a Birmingham address

These are the scored inspections on JCDH’s list, as posted Oct. 17, for businesses whose address reads “Birmingham.” The list covers inspections from Oct. 12 to 15. A Birmingham mailing address does not always mean the business is inside the city limits; ZIP codes such as 35209 and 35244 reach into neighboring cities.

Sixteen of the 50 inspections on the list carried a Birmingham address. Their scores ranged from 88 to 100.

JCDH’s list shows the most recent scored inspections first and can be browsed by the first letter of a business name. Each entry gives the permit number, score, name, address, inspection date and whether the business is smoke free. Names appear as the business is permitted, which may differ from its sign.

Food trucks, events and cottage food

JCDH also permits mobile food units and temporary food service at events, and it publishes rules for cottage food vendors, on its food protection page.
